Description
A variety of positions are available for those who have proven
excellence in the English language and are proficient in current
techniques
and styles of editing for clarity. Candidates should be familiar
with standard style and writing guides,
such as:
- Chicago
Manual of Style
- Gregg Reference Manual
- American Medical Association Manual
of Style
- Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association
- CBE Scientific Style and Format
- Associated Press Style Book
- The Elements of Style, Strunk & White
- On Writing Well, William Zinsser
Candidates should be familiar with the US Government's Plain
Language Initiative and its resource referrals, and be able to
apply its recommendations.
Specific subject-matter expertise (SME) and ability to work with
SMEs will be considered an added value in one or more of the following:
Areas of focus
- Life sciences
- Pharmacology, drug discovery, and regulatory process
- Biomedicine and medical research
- Sports
- Education
- Intellectual property and technology transfer
- General business
- Government and law
- Content for marketing collateral and Web sites
Requirements
- Demonstrated ability to re-write, organize, and edit long,
complex documents
- Fluency with interactive, word-processing-based and manual
mark-up techniques
- Ability to work within project schedules
- References or equivalent, verifiable work demonstrating recent
substantive editing and project management for documents or
significant publications
- 10+ years verifiable work experience
Prefer
- Editorial certifications—as by BELS
- Ability to diagram sentences and explain sentence syntax
- Education or fluency in Latin, German, French, Greek, or Spanish
- BS, BA, MBA, PhD, MD, JD, MPH
