Description
A variety of positions are available for those who have proven
excellence in the English language and expertise in current techniques
and styles of writing. Applicant should
be familiar with standard style guides, writing guides, and dictionaries,
such as:
- Chicago Manual of Style
- Gregg Reference Manual
- American Medical Association Manual of Style
- Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association
- CBE Scientific Style and Format
- Associated Press Style Book
- Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, 11th edition
- The Elements of Style, Strunk & White
- On Writing Well, William Zinsser
Candidates should be familiar with the US Government's Plain
Language Initiative and its resource referrals, and be able to
apply its recommendations.
Specific subject-matter expertise (SME) and ability to work with
SMEs will be considered an added value in one or more of the following:
Areas of focus
- Life sciences
- Pharmacology, drug discovery, and regulatory process
- Biomedicine and medical research
- Sports
- Education
- Intellectual property and technology transfer
- General business
- Government and law
- Content for marketing collateral and Web sites
Requirements
- Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, create, and write long,
complex documents—produced with clarity.
- Fluency with standard word-processor use in PC or Mac environments—Word,
WordPerfect, text-based editors
- Understanding of word-processing-based
and manual editorial techniques
- Ability to apply editorial suggestions to revisions
- Ability to work within project schedules
- References or equivalent, verifiable work demonstrating recent
writing and project management for documents or significant
publications—with knowledge and application of excellent
English syntax.
- 10+ years verifiable work experience
Prefer
- Professional writing certifications
- Ability to diagram sentences and explain sentence syntax
- Education or fluency in Latin, German, French, Greek, or Spanish
- Fluency with standard DTP applications, such as Adobe
Framemaker, Adobe Acrobat
- BS, BA, MBA, PhD,
MD, JD, MPH
