The
American Journal of Gastroenterology published an alert about
potential association of a popular acne drug to development of
Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
HOUSTON, TX-The American Journal of Gastroenterology
published an important drug
alert by Laurel Prokop, President of Techstyle Group,
on September 1999 (Vol. 94, No. 9).
Ms. Prokop, a science editor and researcher for
over 15 years, reported on a self-funded study she performed which
demonstrated an association of the
popular
acne
drug
isotretinoin
(Accutane® by
Hoffman LaRoche)
with the development of gastrointestinal disease in teenagers
and young adults—Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
It will remain unknown how widespread this effect
is until the FDA and the medical community undertakes an epidemiological
study of immense proportion. Laurel's Letter to the Editor was
given expedited publishing by Editor-in-Chief Eamonn Quigley
because of its importance, its originality, and its short,
lucid reporting.
Techstyle Group sponsored this effort as part of its
involvement with the medical community and advocacy for objective,
investigative research. It is a good example of uncovering and
corroborating results through detailed and clear work. Reprints of this report Letter may be obtained directly from
Elsevier Science, publisher of the Journal.
